Solid Ground

Early in my trip, I hiked to the Rapids of the Drowned near Fort Smith, NWT. At the time I was struck by how calm the Pelicans were in the face of the wild river.

I have to admit, I’ve been having a hard time adjusting to normal life after 3 months on the road. I haven’t been like the Pelican at all. In a way, it has felt like I’m being overwhelmed with waves in my own rapids of the drowned.

The pelican isn’t on his own. He’s standing on a rock. Without that rock, he would be swept away.

“The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my savoir;
my God is my rock, in whom I find protection.
He is my shield, the power that saves me,
and my place of safety.”
Psalm 18:2

It’s hard because it seems I so often fall back into the waves, and at times I even want the waves. I need this reminder to find my place of safety in God, my solid ground.
